Music Waves Q&A: MYRY
learn more about MYRY through dipity's monthly music interview spotlights
Introduction
MYRY is a moody alt-pop sensation hailing from Brussels, now based in the UK. With a unique blend of melancholic notes, crisp vocals, and vulnerable lyrics, MYRY’s music captures the essence of human emotion. Balancing a career in medicine with her passion for music, she has quickly made a name for herself with singles like “Ghosts,” “Stuck in a Loop,” and “Born Tired.” Her sound is a harmonious blend of warm, intimate vocals and intricate instrumentals, making her an artist to watch.
Q: What is your name? Where are you located?
Hey, it’s MYRY! I am currently in the UK, but I have roots in Italy, though I was raised in Brussels.
Q: What is the backstory behind your artist name?
MYRY is derived from my real name ‘Miriam.’ I had originally come up with it when someone close to me asked me what my sci-fi name would be, but then I ended up liking it so much that I decided to use it as my artist name.
Q: How did you begin your journey into the world of music? AND How long have you been in the music industry?
My journey into music began in childhood. I started with the school choir and progressed to music lessons in singing, piano, guitar, and drums. I then spent my teen years making covers on YouTube, and have then been active in the music industry since 2020 when I released my first singles, “Ghosts” and “Stuck in a Loop.” I delved more into the production side of things from 2022.
Q: What inspires you as an artist? Give us some insight into your creative process.
My inspiration comes from personal experiences and emotions. I often write songs to communicate feelings I find hard to express in conversations. I draw inspiration from a mix of past hardships, life events, and my surroundings, allowing my music to be a form of emotional release and storytelling.
Q: What's your favorite song you've released? Why is it your fave song?
This may sound biased by the fact that it’s my latest release, but my favorite song that I have released is “Maze.” I just particularly relate to it in this phase of life. I am constantly juggling my own workaholism and wanting to finish projects to the highest standards (which keeps me a prisoner of my own home/desk) with wanting to be happy in life, to see my friends, to get out and experience the world.
Q: What's an upcoming project or which event(s) are you excited about?
I am currently working on several unreleased songs and collaborating with some really talented people. I have a few more releases lined up for this year which I am very excited about! I am also learning more about the technical side of things every day and excited to continue developing new and old skills.
Q: We love to read and get inspired by lyrics. Share the title of a song and its lyrics (one of your favorite songs you've either written or released).
Maze.
This house is a maze I’m swallowed in safely But you’re at the gates All day This house is a maze Each corner relieves me My favourite place It seems And keep yourself busy Too busy for friends Too busy for family Forget what they say And I’m in the darkness I’m hunter and prey Can’t keep a promise This house is a maze This house is a maze (…) These walls are my mates They know all my secrets They’e keeping me safe And never betray me This house is a maze A wonderful cage Get lost in the moment And carried away And I’m getting older At frightening pace (…) Carry me In your mind Carry me In your mind Carry me (…) And as I get older And covered in grey Make me a promise Remember my name
Q: What are your thoughts about the world of poetry?
Poetry and music are deeply intertwined, both offer a powerful means of emotional expression. I enjoy the works of modern authors like Rupi Kaur and more traditional Italian ones like Eugenio Montale. While I primarily write songs, I have dabbled in poetry occasionally, finding it a therapeutic outlet similar to music. Sometimes, it takes the pressure away knowing that I don’t have to turn it into a full song and I can just write words—they can become lyrics, or stay a ‘poem.’
Q: What’s one fun or interesting fact about yourself that your listeners may not know about you?
A fun fact about me is that I work as a medical doctor part-time. People don’t expect a medical career to be able to co-exist with a music career, but I don’t think I could pick one between music and medicine. They are so complimentary and rewarding in different ways. I also train assistance dogs for a charity, which is super cute and rewarding.
Q: What was the last song you listened to or music video you watched that you recommend others listen to?
The last song I listened to was “VAN GOGH” by METTE while watching her music video. I just think she’s super cool and talented!
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians that you listen to?
Some of my favorite artists include alt-J, Editors, Interpol, Glass Animals, Florence + The Machine, Bon Iver, The National, James Blake, Keaton Henson, Billie Eilish and Daughter.
