learn more about Marley Angel through dipity's monthly music interview spotlights
Introduction
Marley Angel is a versatile musician hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. With a unique blend of folk, indie, and electronic influences, Marley creates a sound that is both innovative and deeply personal. Marley's musical journey began under the name Marcella Wolf, where they released two critically acclaimed albums, WONDER BOY and Mind of the Masses, each amassing over 100K streams on Spotify. These early works showcased Marley's ability to weave intricate narratives with compelling melodies, earning a dedicated following.
Transitioning to the name Marley Angel, they continued to push the boundaries of genre and style. The first album under this new moniker, Love Is Hell, Earth is Hot, resonated deeply with listeners, achieving an impressive 290K streams. Marley's latest release, ONE NIGHT ONLY, continues this trend of success, with 109k streams and counting.
Q:What is your name? AND Where are you currently located?
I’m Marley Angel, I’m originally from St. Louis but I live in Illinois (moving soon).
Q: What’s the story behind your artist name?
So originally I went by Marcella Wolf, I came up with the name from a 2K game, but in 2019 after I came out, the name just didn’t feel right. Everything associated with it just wasn’t me anymore—I just outgrew it. In 2021, I changed it to Marley Angel. I always loved the name “Marley” and I added “Angel” because of my dreamy style.
Q: How did you begin your journey into the world of music? AND How long have you been in the music industry?
Originally, I was just an artist (painting, drawing etc.) but I wanted another way to express myself so when I was 13, I started making music from my crappy Android phone hahaha. It was bad of course but from then I knew I wanted to do it more! When I was 17, I bought a laptop from a pawn shop and started using a trial version of FL Studio—started releasing music on all streaming platforms and the rest is history. I wasn’t sure if I would find any kind of success…but I did! I dropped two albums WONDER BOY and Mind Of The Masses under the old name and both are currently at 100k+.
Q: What inspires you as an artist? Give us some insight into your creative process.
Honestly, everything inspires me, but more so other artists inspire me. I love meeting new artists and seeing everyone’s creativity and ideas—all my music friends are amazing and I wish so much success to my peers. As far as my creative process goes, first I come up with a theme, then I think of things that relate to that theme, then I make a song to create that feeling, and then I create promo photos/art. After I make the cover art, I put it out and [perhaps] it’s not for everyone but it’s my way of doing things.
Q: What's your favorite song you've released? AND Why?
As of now it’s my song “SPACEMAN” from my new album ONE NIGHT ONLY. The song is about finding peace with loneliness and isolation—something I do a lot and something I’m working on. This track is different though because for one it’s the first track that used my voice even if it’s humming. And second, the whole track is saying: “Hey, I’m alone but that’s okay.” The name “SPACEMAN” was inspired by a friend of mine on Instagram who is also a musician THE RANGER @the_ranger_official.
Q: What's an upcoming project or which event(s) are you excited about?
So currently I’m working on a EP called “The Milk Is Sour Act 1” and by the time this comes out I’ve dropped a new song from the EP “Foutre • Esprit • Beauté” which is the third track from the EP. This track is about liberation, resilience and strength, probably one of my favorite songs from the EP for sure.
Q: If your music is more instrumental without lyrics then: How would you describe it overall?AND What are some of your primary focuses?
I’d say it’s very dreamy and manic. Whatever genre I’m into at the moment, whatever style I’m trying to go for just know it’s going to be unorthodox and all over the place but in some way it’s always dreamy. So I can confidently say if you go through my whole catalog, there’s something for everyone!
My music is a journey of self-reflection and self-acceptance, often featuring acoustic guitar instrumentals that evoke a sense of intimacy and authenticity. I explore the depths of human emotion and often experiment with new dynamic sounds [across each song release].
Q: What are your thoughts about the world of poetry?
The world of poetry is beautiful, there’s an artist that inspires me so much to keep writing AshleyCae @dr.wiseword and she has spoken word album Black God and it’s one of the most beautiful projects I’ve heard. Overall, I think poetry is amazing and I definitely wanna get back into writing, and honestly I think we need more spoken word projects, seriously.
Q: What are some fun facts that your listeners may not know about you?
I have a few, so when I was in the 7th grade I entered this art contest and I was one of the students who won, so for the students who won—they got to be the mayor. Another fact about me is that I’m a poet as well. I don’t write as much as I used to but I’m definitely going to get back into it. I love cows, they are so cute. I also love cats.
Q: What was the last song you listened to that you recommend others check out?
“Sunsine Sometimes” by Hanna Mars
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians that you listen to or would like to give a shout-out to?

Henry @thee.jhenry, IK.TOMI @ik.tomii, QUEERPOLO @queerpolo, nuépa @nuepa_555, ZaeySoulaan @zaeydelasoul, Jonah The Dreamr @joedreamr, and Kisos @itskisos…ugh the list goes on!
