Music Waves Q&A: Josh Pozzi
learn more about Josh Pozzi through dipity's monthly music interview spotlights
Introduction
Born in 2000 in Swansea, UK, and currently residing in Bristol, Josh Pozzi is an upcoming singer/songwriter and producer. Growing up, Josh was immersed in a diverse range of music, including pop, rock, metal, and folk. From as early as five years old, he would often be called upon to perform his original songs for family gatherings, regardless of the occasion.
A recent graduate of the British Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), Josh is now emerging as an innovative and unique artist. His musical style is predominantly alternative R&B, drawing inspiration from Pop, Hip-Hop, and Electronica. Influenced by artists such as James Blake, Aurora, and The Hics; Josh has crafted a distinctive sound that blends dark, electronic elements with modern pop.
Josh’s recent EP hostage is out now! Prepare to lose yourself in the haunting melodies, rich electronic textures, and poignant lyrics exploring themes of loss, escape, and heartbreak.
Q: What is your name? AND Where are you currently located?
My name is Josh Pozzi. I am currently located in Bristol, UK; but I am originally from Swansea, Wales.
Q: How did you begin your journey into the world of music? AND How long have you been in the music industry?
So, I would say my journey into the music world began in 2019 when I enrolled at BIMM Bristol (Music University). I was surrounded by industry professionals and fellow students who shared my passions. I had the opportunity to learn and experience a lot during my time there. [Since I was 10 years old which was back in 2010], I have been writing and playing music. I started with just a guitar and vocals, and I would share my music online. I also performed at various venues across England and Wales.
Q: What inspires you as an artist? Give us some insight into your creative process.
I would say that my interactions and experiences in the world inspire me to create music. It could be something as small as a TV show or a significant life event that ignites a spark, helping me create music.
Q: What's your favorite song you've released? AND Why?
I would say my all time favourite song that I have released is “Gun,” it was one of the least popular from my recent hostage release. But I love it as it changed my genre of writing and I really resonated with the vibe.
Q: What's an upcoming project or which event(s) are you excited about?
Depending on when this is read, I’m either about to release my short film/ visual EP or I have just released it—check out my YouTube channel. I have also just delivered some new songs to mastering, so they will be released later this year which is really exciting!
Q: We love to read and get inspired by lyrics. Share the title of a song and its lyrics (one of your favorite songs you've either written or released).
[The below] is from a song called “Am I Too Late For You?” on my hostage EP, the general theme is around loss, but I like letting people attach their own feelings to this song as it can be powerful for different reasons:
Am I too late for you? Should I have stayed by you As you laid so peacefully You call for me And your eyes begin to close
Q: What are your thoughts about the world of poetry?
I wouldn’t say I’m deeply into poetry in the traditional sense, but as a songwriter, I think there’s a natural connection between the two. Finding the right words to express emotions and to tell a story. I don’t have any favourite poets or poems at the moment, but I’m always up for recommendations!
Q: What’s your favorite musical instrument?
I play a few instruments, but my favourite is the acoustic guitar. I can truly disconnect and write songs on it as if it’s an extension of myself. I’ve been playing since I was around 5 or 6 years old (I should be better by now, I know!), and I was taught for a while by a teacher named Ashley from Neath, Wales. Ashley taught me a lot about having fun with an instrument and exploring it rather than focusing solely on theory and strict methods. This approach has remained with me throughout my life.
Q: What is one book you’d recommend to others?
A book I highly recommend is from Matt Dahlia, titled Talk to Strangers: The Yes Theory Story. I always find it challenging to read a complete book because I struggle to concentrate a lot of the time! But this book is an exception. It genuinely motivates me on days when I’m feeling unmotivated and reminds me to persevere and push myself beyond my comfort zone. I highly recommend giving it a go!
Q: What was the last song or music video you watched that you recommend others check out?
The last song I listened to, (well I’m actually currently listening to as I write this out), is a song called “SWIM HOME” by Cautious Clay, featuring John Mayer.
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians that you listen to?
My favourite artists at the moment are FKA Twigs, Mac Miller and I’m loving Post Malone’s country album!
Q: Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring musicians and artists?
The biggest piece of advice I’d give is to just enjoy the process of making music. It’s easy to get caught up with what you should be doing, social media and everything else that you can quite easily fall out of love with the actual practise of doing music. Even if that’s thinking you have to stay in a certain genre. Just do what you love and the rest will come.
