Introduction
Amir Astra is an alternative rap artist, singer, and songwriter originally from Chicago. Enthralled by sound and driven by a desire to push creative boundaries, Amir fuses dynamic energy with thoughtful lyricism, creating a sound that is fresh and unique. With the support of collaborators Danny Garcia, Donny Darkpop, and Malik Maat, he’s focused on releasing singles and EPs while preparing to bring his music to live stages. Amir’s mission is simple: to make music that resonates, inspires, and leaves a lasting impact.
Q: What is your name? AND Where are you currently located?
I am Amir Astra, an artist currently based in Los Angeles, though my roots trace back to Chicago. My journey into music has been deeply personal and evolutionary, shaping a sound that is as authentic as it is boundary-pushing.
Q: What’s the story behind your artist name?
Amir Astra is more than just a stage name; it carries significance. 'Amir' is my middle name, while 'Astra' comes from the Latin word for 'stars.' Together, they represent my artistic vision—reaching for the stars while staying true to myself.
Q: How did you begin your journey into the world of music? AND How long have you been in the music industry?
My journey began in third grade when I picked up the saxophone. In sixth grade, I joined a hip-hop club, marking the beginning of my songwriting endeavors. By my late teens, I had committed to pursuing music seriously, and for the past five years, I have been carving out my space in the industry.
Q: What inspires you as an artist? Give us some insight into your creative process.
I draw inspiration from personal experiences, stories from friends, and cinematic influences. Musically, I admire artists like OutKast, Lil Wayne, and Kendrick Lamar. My creative process is rooted in spontaneity—I avoid overthinking and instead immerse myself in the moment, allowing inspiration to flow organically.
Q: What's your favorite song you've released? AND Why?
Although my favorite track has yet to be released, I am particularly proud of a song called “Pass Through.” It’s an intimate and honest reflection on a past relationship, capturing my emotions in a raw and authentic way.
Q: What's an upcoming project or which event(s) are you excited about?
I am especially excited about my upcoming rollout plan, which will showcase my evolving sound. My goal is to expand my artistic boundaries and achieve the creative milestones I have long envisioned.
Q: We love to read and get inspired by lyrics. Share the title of a song and its lyrics (one of your favorite songs you've either written or released).
As of February 18th, my latest release [was] “R&G” [but as of April my new song “Don’t Bother Me” is actually out now too]. “R&G’s” powerful bridge and hook underscore my internal battle and eventual triumph, making it a deeply personal and resonant piece. The song encapsulates themes of struggle, resilience, and transformation, as highlighted in the following lyrics:
[Pre2] Running and gunning Turn nothing to something (If you gon play you gon pay) Lacking abundance Like how can we function (Felt like I'm trapped in a cage) Looking for substance Another one burning (boofing shit straight to my face) Feel up my lungs n Exhale my discernment (Lost all my will to be great) [Bridge] Lost all my will to be great, great Feel like I’m trapped in a cage Lost all my will to be great, great Lost all me will to be... [Full Hook] Running running running for my life This shit kill you ohhh Dodging bullets, I put up a fight My will can’t be destroyed Gunning for the top, I see the light The pain can’t be avoided Took that shit and put it to the fire The old me I destroyed him x2
Q: What are your thoughts about the world of poetry?
While I don’t consider myself a traditional poet, I deeply appreciate poetry in its various forms. For me, songwriting is poetry—every track I write is a lyrical expression of emotion and experience.
Q: What is one fact that your listeners may not know about you?
A lesser-known fact about me is that I grew up in a funeral home. This unique upbringing exposed me to themes of mortality from an early age, which has inevitably shaped my perspective and artistic expression. This environment has influenced my music, infusing it with depth and introspection.
Q: What was the last music video you watched that you recommend others check out?
The last song I listened to was “Woes of The World” by Saba Pivot & No ID. I highly recommend it for its storytelling and emotional depth.
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians that you listen to or would like to give a shout-out to?
My musical taste is eclectic, and I find inspiration in artists like Dijon, Smino, Amirado, Mike, and Kairo, all of whom contribute to the diverse soundscape that influences my artistry.
