Q: What is your name? Where are you located?
My name is Max Biebuyck, I’m from Southern California where I currently still live.
Q: What is the backstory behind your artist name?
My artist name (MUX) is also my nickname, originally given to me by my childhood best friend, Franco. He would just say my name in a funny voice that sounded like “Mux,” and that caught on and eventually the rest of my friends and family started calling me that, so it was there before I even decided I wanted to release music. By the time I did wanna put music out it only felt natural to go with that.
Q: How did you begin your journey into the world of music? AND How long have you been in the music industry?
I started getting into music very young, playing guitar when I was a kid. From there I got into those “join the band” programs that would put kids in groups to practice and play together, I remember having tons of fun with that. A lot of my music sense came from my dad who was also a singer, my mom who would always have her music on around the house, and my cousin who was always playing guitar and in bands. I always dabbled with the idea of pursuing music fully in my adolescent years, but it wasn’t until about 2021 when I put my first stuff up on music platforms.
Q: What inspires you as an artist? Give us some insight into your creative process.
I have always had such a fascination with people creating art that just resonates with so many people and is so special that it lives on through time. Leaving that type of impact on the world has always been such a beautifully chilling concept to me. Watching any of my earliest idols do what they do and seeing what they’ve created, I just knew in my head it was like, “yup I wanna spark that feeling that they gave me and let it hit other people” and inspire others in turn to sorta keep that flame going.
Q: What's your favorite song you've released? Why is it your fave song?
My favorite song I’ve ever released so far I think is “Secrets,”—to me it’s kinda the first one where I feel like I came into my own sound melodically and lyrically.
Q: What's an upcoming project or which event(s) are you excited about?
I have a 5 track EP that just came out called pushover. Where I really tried to lock in on all the components and dynamics of my sound I’ve been strengthening and sharpening. I think it’s my best body of work so far. Besides that I also have a show coming up in L.A. I’m really excited for!
Q: We love to read and get inspired by lyrics. Share the title of a song and its lyrics (one of your favorite songs you've either written or released).
I think some of my favorite lyrics are in this EP pushover—one of them is from a track called “Faction” that goes “All the pictures I’ve painted of myself are fading,” which has a lot to do with ego death or facing your conceptual self.
Q: What are your thoughts about the world of poetry?
I do enjoy poetry and have a lot of respect for the world of it. I don’t personally write what I consider to be full poetry but I’d like to think my songwriting style is very similar to it.
Q: What is one book you’d recommend to others?
A book I’ve been swearing by and recommending more recently is The Creative Act: A Way of Being (2023) by Rick Rubin. Rick is one of my most looked up to people in the industry for his simplistic and open approach to the world of art, and it’s pretty great reading through all of his ideas.
Q: What was the last song you listened to or music video you watched (excluding your own music) that you recommend others listen to)?
I’ve been recently rewatching music videos from the band OK Go. If you haven’t seen any I highly recommend it because of how much time and work they put into them to get such perfect takes with there elaborate ideas, plus I really like their music.
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians that you listen to?
Gorillaz to Daft Punk and pretty much anything in between. A newer artist I really like is brakence.
